Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. (1 John 2:6)
"If you are an apprentice of Jesus your end goal is to grow and mature into the kind of person that can say and do all the things that Jesus said and did." -- John Mark Comer
Today's "Big Idea"
WHAT WOULD JESUS DO IF HE WERE ME ?
A. HOW DO WE DO AS JESUS DID?
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit...
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:14, 18-19)
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. (Romans 8:11)
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12)
1. We can do as Jesus did because the SAME SPIRIT lives in us!
B. WHAT DID JESUS DO?
1. JESUS INCLUDED: He practiced RADICAL HOSPITALITY .
i. You must include others in your SPACE , at your TABLE , and with your STUFF .
"In Luke's Gospel Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal." -- Robert Karris
"Jesus got himself crucified by the way he ate." -- Robert Karris
2. JESUS INVITED: He preached THE GOSPEL .
"You see, it's easy for a lot of us (and I'm writing to myself here) to kind of fudge this part of our apprenticeship to Jesus. I'm down for formation, emotion health, contemplative prayer -- sign me up. But preaching the gospel? I think I'll just mow my neighbor's lawn and hope they figure out Jesus rose from the dead." -- John Mark Comer
i. BEAR WITNESS to what God HAS DONE and IS DOING in your life.
3. JESUS INFLUENCED: He lived a BEAUTIFUL LIFE .
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:12)
i. The beautiful life is WORKED OUT in your WORKPLACE .
"I'm prepared to contend that the primary location for spiritual formation is the workplace." -- Eugene Peterson
"Whatever your life's work is, do it well... If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, like Shakespeare wrote poetry, like Beethoven composed music; sweep streets so well that all the host of Heaven and earth will have to pause and say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper, who swept his job well.'" -- Martin Luther King Jr.*
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)
