Are you a kitchen volunteer or thinking of becoming one? Do you want to ensure the food you prepare for your community is safe and delicious?
Join us for a morning Food Safety Fundamentals Workshop led by a former certified FoodSafe Instructor!
This training is specifically designed for people who volunteer in non-commercial kitchen settings—such as community centres, shelters, places of worship, or school programs. While volunteering is a rewarding way to give back, preparing food for others comes with a big responsibility.
What You'll Learn
This workshop will focus on the fundamental safety knowledge you need to be a responsible kitchen volunteer, grouped into three essential areas:
Stop Contamination at the Source: Learn essential practices to prevent foodborne illness. This includes understanding the three main causes of illness, the concept of cross-contamination (from hands, surfaces, and tools), and how to apply critical personal hygiene and sickness protocols.
Control the Temperature Danger Zone: Master the most critical part of food safety: managing temperatures. We'll show you how to identify the high-risk foods, properly store, cook, cool, and reheat meals to keep them out of the "danger zone," and why factors like FATTOM are key to bacterial control.
Clean and Sanitize Effectively: Gain practical skills for maintaining a hygienic environment. This covers proper manual dishwashing techniques (the three-compartment sink method), understanding the difference between simple cleaning and sanitizing, and how to safely handle and prepare food from receiving it to serving it.
Important Notes
No Certification Provided: This workshop is for educational purposes only and does not result in a formal FoodSafe or food handler certification. Our goal is to simply make you a more educated and confident volunteer in the kitchen.
Come learn how to enhance your skills and ensure the well-being of those you serve!
