Worship: Beyond the music
I think it's fair to say that we truthfully don't know what worship really ought to be like. We really only know in part what it should be like. We try our best to give to God what we think is appropriate, but at the end of the day, our efforts are admittedly feeble at best. I often wonder if, when we get to heaven, we don’t all slap our foreheads collectively and exclaim, “So THAT is what it could have been like!” Who knows? I like the way Eugene Peterson put it in this statement: “Worship is the strategy by which we interrupt our pre-occupation with ourselves and attend to the presence of God. Worship is the time and place that we assign to deliberate attentiveness to God – not because He’s constricted to time and place, but because our self-importance is so insidiously relentless that if we don’t deliberately interrupt ourselves regularly, we have no chance of attending to Him at all at other times and in other places.” I don’t use the word “insidious” all that often, but I’d have to agree with his assessment.
